Stay High 149

Wayne Roberts (October 20, 1950 – June 11, 2012), known as Stay High 149, was a pioneering American graffiti artist renowned for his distinctive “Smoker” tag—a haloed stick figure inspired by the 1960s TV show *The Saint*, depicted smoking a joint.

Born in Emporia, Virginia, Roberts moved to the Bronx, New York, at age six. In the early 1970s, he began tagging subway cars with his signature, often accompanied by the phrase “Voice of the Ghetto.” His work deviated from the straight letter tags of the time, introducing a more artistic flourish to graffiti.

Roberts’ influence extended beyond the streets; he collaborated with brands like Huf and Burton Snowboards, and was featured in the 2004 documentary *Just to Get a Rep*. He passed away on June 11, 2012, from liver disease at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx.
